One of only two parrots indigenous to the U.S., the Carolina Parakeet went extinct in 1918, through mass killing, habitat devastation, millinery use, and capture. Ornithologist Alexander Wilson observed that when one bird was shot, the rest gathered around the wounded rather than flying to safety. As a result farmers easily killed entire flocks, hunting this species to extinction.
